ARTISTIC PREMISE
The residency begins from the proposition that percussion performance does not merely transmit musical knowledge produced elsewhere: it actively constitutes such knowledge through embodied, material, temporal, perceptual, and relational acts of situated musical realization.
Notation, technique, instrument selection, listening, memory, discussion, experimentation, rehearsal, interpretation, documentation, and performance are treated as interdependent dimensions of practice. Each generates distinct knowledge and can transform a work’s meaning, organization, transmission, and realization in concrete performance.
For percussionists and ensembles, the residency provides a sustained context for examining repertoires, instruments, objects, technologies, setup architectures, and interpretative strategies. Questions of actuation, articulation, duration, resonance, decay, balance, coordination, timbre, spatialization, historical mediation, and perceptual organization can be pursued while performances and methodologies remain genuinely open to further development.
The residency creates conditions for knowledge embedded in percussion practice to become explicit, communicable, and critically examinable. Participants’ understanding of instruments, implements, surfaces, materials, gestures, movement, setup relations, rehearsal processes, technologies, and performance histories becomes integral to the inquiry. Interpretation is approached not as compliance with instructions, but as situated judgment, embodied analysis, distributed authorship, and musical thinking enacted through sound.
The residency neither reduces percussion practice to technical problem-solving nor instrumentalizes rehearsal as efficient concert preparation. It establishes a rigorous, exploratory environment in which participants articulate methodologies, examine presuppositions, negotiate decisions, test propositions, and reflect on the historical, cultural, ethical, aesthetic, epistemic, ecological, technological, and institutional conditions through which percussion becomes meaningful.
